Painting miniature walls, label makers and dumplings!
Last game you played? Valheim! Although I played it extensively before, it is a game I love to return to, especially since new content keeps being added.
What activity that most others see as a task or chore, is something that you actually enjoy? Labelling every jar, pot, vessel, and container I have in my house.
Quote from a reading you’d recommend? “In 1978, Texas Instruments had just released a sound-effects chip that could be programmed to generate a variety of sound effects. It was clumsy but good enough for my needs. I purchased one and I added some software to the program to trigger the sound chip whenever a tank fired its gun. I fed the chip’s output into a small speaker and, by golly gee, it really worked! Whenever a tank fired, a nice throaty explosion sounded on the speaker.
I decided to surprise my friend and playtester Mike, so I fed the output of the sound chip directly into my stereo system. I invited Mike over to play a few rounds with a “new improvement” I had made on the software. We sat down, the game began, and we both started frantically maneuvering our tanks, searching for each other. The surprise, it turned out, was on both of us, because Mike saw my tanks first. He entered a fire command before I even suspected that we had made contact. Unfortunately, I had miscalculated the impedance matching of the chip to the stereo, and so the resulting explosion was enough to knock us both out of our chairs. As we staggered to our feet, I asked, “What do you think of the new sound effects?” (Crawford 2003).
What’s something you’ve done, written, or helped create that you’re proud of? I’m painting a DnD scene set that features two lovely tavern buildings. I just finished the floor and wall for one of them, and it came out pretty good!

What’s one of your favorite albums? A playlist I’ve listened to recently while writing is Paradox Interactive. Some nice background music, some more epic pieces if you’re getting in the flow writing your argument, and a couple of metal version chucked in there just because.
What gadget would you like to try or already have and can recommend? Going back to another point, a label-machine-thingie. I got this one, no ink needed and I can create all kind of cute designs with the app!
What is the best thing about spring? That first day when you realise you do NOT need a coat that day! Not even just in case, you can just venture into the world without needing the extra layer, it’s great!
“What’s something new you’ve learned how to do recently?“Making my own dumpling dough and hand-folding them! I made dumplings using premade wrappers before, but finally decided to give the entire process a go.
What question should be swapped out for another?
Let’s retire “What’s one of your favorite albums?” and go with “What game has some stellar/your favourite voice-acting?“

Hello! My name is Corine Gerritsen and I am responsible for the subproject ‘Mechanics’ in the project of Playful Time machines. I got both my BA degree in history and my RMA in Ancient Studies at Utrecht University. I started focusing on the past in video games during my internship at VALUE, and the topic stuck. Always up for checking out new, old, small, big, whacky, and serious ludic renditions of the past.
